What is internet of things (IoT)?

The internet of things, also known as IoT, revolves around the concept of connecting many, many devices together through the internet.

The purpose is to let these devices create their own database, sharing the data they collect between them, to make your life easier. Your Fitbit. Your car. Some are even developing toasters that can connect you to the internet!

The IoT has become more common in recent years, with many people using its services in areas such as smart home technology or wearable devices. You may not know about the database that connects your Google home to your Apple watch, but every day the IoT is developing more and more.

The advancements being made could mean already simple things like getting ready in the morning, could become even easier. Picture this: Your alarm clock wakes you at six o’clock, when it goes off, it notifies your coffee machine to start brewing. When you unlock your car, it connects to your calendar and programs the GPS to take you to where you need to be. So, when you’re strapped in, your route is already decided.

In a broader view, the IoT could be used in much larger advancements. Projects regarding transportation and energy are areas where the IoT will be applied in later years. This development has little restrictions and can be expanded in multiple directions.

Smart cities are one of these advancements entirely founded on the use of the IoT. Urban areas all connected through electronic devices that manage resources and data collected from all sources around the area.

With this extraordinary proof of what technology can do for the future and how much the internet can be improved, the possibilities regarding the IoT are endless.
