IET Manages ICT Services for the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup
Monday, 01 December 2008
  • Live internet results from the Homeless World Cup for first time
  • More than 500 homeless athletes from 56 countries are competing at Federation Square in Melbourne from today
  • IET responsible for the delivery of all ICT services for the event

MELBOURNE (December 1, 2008) - IET Group Pty Ltd (IET), a Melbourne-based IT project services company, is providing athletes, media and operations staff attending the Homeless World Cup on December 1 in Melbourne, with the most advanced information and communications technology (ICT) environment yet.

IET has worked for more than a year with 11 different ICT companies, including Telstra, Cisco and Motorola, to manage the advanced data, voice and application services that are being used in the operations of the international football tournament that will involve more than 500 athletes from up to 56 countries.

IET and the other companies are providing the services as part of sponsorship of the Homeless World Cup, a potentially life-changing event that gives homeless people from around the world the opportunity to represent their country.

IET has managed the implementation of a wide area network across event sites in Melbourne that will allow live results from the competition to be featured on the internet for the first time via a web based system provided by Interact Sport Pty Ltd.  Terminals located pitch side at the three competition venues will facilitate results and statistical entry of the 349 matches and provide real time information on the progress of each country within the competition’s Groups via the tournaments website.

IET, whose clients include Sensis and Thales Australia, has also coordinated wireless voice and data services to allow streamlined communications for operations staff and media covering the event.   In addition, various web-based applications have been implemented to support the complex planning of the event including the management of over 1,000 volunteers.

“With the help of IET and the other technology sponsors we have been able to achieve a world class IT environment, improving tremendously on offerings from previous tournaments,” Homeless World Cup chief operating officer, Samantha Blackstone, said.

“The fact that this has been accomplished largely through the generosity of Melbourne’s IT companies is a remarkable achievement for all involved.”

Most of the 349 matches will take place at Federation Square in central Melbourne, where a purpose-built stadium will be erected to handle 2,500 people.

“We’re proud to have taken a key role in the delivery of IT services for an event that will give disadvantaged people around the world the opportunity to represent their country and hopefully change their lives forever,” IET managing director, Mathew Peterson, said.

“There certainly have been challenges pulling together an ICT environment on a very demanding budget, but we wanted to deliver services that exceed the already high standards expected of technology for international events in Australia.

Other sponsors of the event include UEFA, Nike and Manchester United, as well as BHP Billiton Ltd, Macquarie Group Ltd and The Big Issue, a street paper that benefits the homeless.
